In 2001 Ghana Outlook identified that the three communities of
Abordahi AX were desperately in need of educational facilities for
their young people. In the past, these children have had the use
of a very basic school constructed of mud and thatch. Unfortunately
this building was destroyed by a bush fire in 1999 and since that
time the children have had no formal education. Meetings were held
with all three community leaders, who felt that their children were
extremely disadvantaged because of their lack of a formal education.
Under the Ghanaian education system, communities must build their
own schools before the government can provide staff and equipment.
The three village Assembleymen agreed that the communities would
provide an area of land, which they would clear in preparation for
buliding.
Such was the enthusiasm in the three communities that the land was
not only cleared but a primitive school structure of timber poles
and palm leaves was constructed as a temporary measure.
The ministry of education and Ghana education service then officially
met the communities and approved the plans for the permanent school
structure, and this meant they were happy with the commitment of
three communities toward the school and were committed to finding
the necessary qualified teaching staff once the project was completed.
As part of this project it was proposed that a water borehole would
be provided for the communities, to help eradicate the danger of
guinea worm and other parasitic infection. As a stop gap aqua boxes(a
water filter device) were distributed by GO on behalf of CART and
Rotary Clubs UK, to all family units within the three communities
of Abordahi AX. It means that these people have, for the first time,
access to clean safe drinking water.
